Taking the First Step

“Take the first step in faith.  You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just the first step.”  –  Martin Luther King, Jr.
I was spinning during spin class this morning thinking about life.  Well, as much as you can while you’re spinning.  I realize that I do well with working out, and other goals if I just get started.  For example, my spin class is at 6 am in the morning, so I set my alarm for 5:24 am.  I’m great as soon as I get out of bed.  That’s the first step.  I do fine on the treadmill, too, after I have taken the first step to get on it.  Taking that first step leads to the path of success and fulfillment.  I am confident I will reach my goals as long as I keep taking that first step.  Those first steps paid off even more today.  I realized that morning workouts serve as huge motivators not to eat “crazy” stuff during the day.  When I’ve already worked out, and I don’t want to ruin it.  I realize that I’m too early in my wellness journey to splurge a lot.  Now, if I was just trying to maintain, those gourmet muffins at work wouldn’t be evil.  Unfortunately, I’m at the beginning of my journey, so I am proud to say that I walked past those delectable muffins time after time today.  Can I get a gold star?  Ok.  Just knowing that I can have some willpower and discipline are rewards enough for me.

Much nub and fitness,

Off Day

I’m thinking today is going to be my off day.  I’m realizing that I’m totally exhausted.  Seeing patients during a power outage was a bit much, but I’m fortunate to have been able to make a difference.  Now, I just need to continue to make a difference in my own life.  I’m worth it!  By the way, you’re worth it, too!  I can work out Thursday and Friday to still hit my 4 day of week goal.  I’m going to get my beauty sleep, so I can be ready to kill spin class tomorrow.  My new goal is to be ready to attack a non-beginning spin class by the time I go on vacation in February.  Wish me luck!  My butt’s ready for class tomorrow, too.  I’m ready to leave it all on that bike!  Oh, if you’re wondering, the healthier eating plan is still going well.
9 days down, 12 days until it becomes a habit.
Much nub and fitness,

Return of Jelly Legs

Whew!  I made it through spin class.  I started it off with my legs and booty a bit sore from the treadmill the night before.  I am beginning to believe those Reebok Easytone shoes do make you work harder.  I’ll definitely be wearing those to the treadmill in the future.  Back to spin class.  I peddled almost 2 miles further than last Thursday (today 10.3 miles).   I worked that bike harder and faster.  I honestly felt like it didn’t work me.  I can’t wait to go back.  I’m falling in love with spin class.  My man better watch out.  LOL.  Just kidding:)  I believe he enjoys seeing me be determined and proactive.  I had to make the decision to get healthy for myself first, but turning him on is a huge bonus.  I’m truly seeing how having a support group can keep you motivated.  Between my friends, co-workers, and all of you, I just don’t have an option not to follow through.  Keep holding my feet to the fire.  Thanks!
We’ll see what tomorrow holds.  8 days down, 11 to go until it’s a habit.
Much nub and fitness,

Late Night Treadmill

I started this day off at 4 am getting ready to come back to work.  After a 2.5 hour drive and 9 hour work day, I arrived back at my hotel exhausted.  My good friend called and said she was on the treadmill.  This got me up out of bed and on the treadmill at the hotel after 9 pm.  I’m proud.  I even jogged for part of it, which is huge for me!  I hooked it up while even watching CSI Miami.  On a side note, it was a good episode:)  I can’t believe I finally got that workout in.  Woo-hoo.  Now, just 3 more to hit 4 workouts this week.  Let me start winding down for spin class in the morning.  I believe my booty is ready!

Much nub and fitness,

Mmmmm…Spinach Dip

Today is the tale of spinach dip.  I was at California Pizza Kitchen with my mom.  She up and orders the dang spinach dip.  I love spinach dip, but know that it’s not the best choice for my current eating plan.  I am so proud of myself.  I had less than 2 whole chips with dip.  This is a feat.  I continued my 15-20 chews and only ate half of my lettuce wraps along with the above spinach dip.  This strategy appears to be working out.  One of the themes of my goals is to make new habits that are sustainable.  I don’t want to try something so strenuous or restricted that I am stressed out.  In addition, I don’t want to fall off the wagon because I feel like I’m being tortured or have unreasonable long term goals.  This is just the first week, but I’m excited about the future.  One day at a time!  Thanks for all of your help!
6 days down, 15 days until it’s a habit.
Much nub and fitness,

Wheat pancakes…really???

I stepped on the scale this morning and found a surprise.  I’ve lost 3.5 lbs.  There was another surprise in store for me today.  Wheat pancakes actually taste good.  I went to Denny’s and had them for the first time.  I had them with fruit, turkey bacon, and chicken sausage.  I skipped the hash browns, which can be like crack to me.  I used to have Waffle House on speed dial during medical school.  Just call me Ms. Scattered, Smothered, and Covered.  LOL.  I chewed slow and ended up not even eating an entire pancake before I was full.  I even went really light on the syrup.  I’ve found this chewing more times to be a Godsend.  I truly believe I was eating so fast that my body didn’t have a chance to signal it was full before I had plowed past the point of satiety.  I’ll have to see what surprises are in store for tomorrow.
5 days down, 16 to go until it’s a habit.  Wish me luck.
Much nub and fitness,

Temptation Island

Have you seen that show Temptation Island?  That was theme of the day.  I had to avoid the pitfalls of the yummy doughnuts and gourmet cookies.  For those that don’t know me, I have a huge sweet tooth, so this was huge.  I walked through the door at my mom’s house and was greeted by bacon and potato chips.  I briskly turned on my heels and walked past them.  I am proud.  I avoided all of it!    People keep saying “nothing tastes as good as being lean feels.”  I guess I have to get lean to see if it’s true.  Thanks for all of your help.  I had extra willpower because I didn’t want to admit to all of you that I was eating calorie/fat laden sweets.

I need to make a correction.  I double checked and keep seeing 21 days to create a habit.  So it’s 4 days down, 17 days until it’s a habit:)

Spin Day 2

I discovered the cure for post-spinning pain.  What is it you ask?  Spinning some more!  I went in the lion’s den, aka the YMCA.  I looked straight at the bike seat and hopped on.  Ironically, by the time the class was over, I was a lot less sore than when I arrived.  I learned a new “trick” today, also.  We did hammy, hover, sprint, recover.  I let slip my first expletive in class.  LOL.  2 co-workers even showed up to the class after I had talked to them about my experience.  Who knew I had that effect on people?  Honestly, I love having them there.  They continue to make me even more accountable for going.  All of you reading this are also keeping my feet to the fire, in a nice way. Wish me luck in avoiding the evil doughnuts again at the staff meeting tomorrow morning.
3 days down, 25 to go until it’s a habit.

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Chew Enough

Treadmill…no.  Pool…no.  Tony Horton Ten Minute Workout…yes!  I got up this morning and banged out the full body workout.  That definitely woke me up.   My new eating strategy is to chew my food longer.  I’ve seen 15-20 chews per bite.  I’m now up to 15-22. Not so magically, I’ve gotten full sooner and eating less.  I have no idea when I started eating really fast, especially since I love the taste of food.  I’m excited.  The bonus is that I even passed up on the yummy looking doughnuts at work.  The glazed ones were calling my name, and I said “no!”
Wish me and my butt luck again because I’m going to make it happen in the 6 am spin class tomorrow.  Two days down, and 26 to go.
